Median 12:23:09, mean 12:30:04 — use the median
A finish-time distribution is not symmetrical. There is a hard edge on the fast side, because nobody goes under about seven and a half hours, and a long tail on the slow side that runs all the way to the seventeen-hour cut-off. That tail pulls the mean upward, which is why the mean sits 6:55 above the median.
The median is the better answer to “what does a typical Ironman take?” because it is the time that half the field beat. Half of 786,711 finishers came in under 12:23:09, and half came in over it. That is a statement you can act on; an average is not.

The fastest male cell is 30-34 and the fastest female cell is 25-29. Times rise steadily from there, but note that the 18-24 group is slower than 25-34 in both sexes - youth on its own does not produce a fast Ironman.
An all-time median is not this year's median
The headline figure covers 2002 to 2026, which is long enough for the sport to have changed underneath it. The median got slower through the 2010s as the sport grew and the field broadened, peaking around 12:38:25 in 2015, and has come back down since.
If you are setting a target for next season, the recent rows are the honest comparison. The 2026 median of 12:09:11 is nearly fourteen minutes faster than the all-time figure.

- About 55:18 at the median: 12:12:32 for men against 13:07:50 for women. The gap is fairly stable across age groups, widening slightly in the oldest cells where the samples are smallest and least reliable.

- Swim 1:15:37, bike 6:08:26, run 4:39:54. Note that these do not add up to the median finish time, and they are not supposed to: each leg's median is its own percentile, and transitions are excluded. Nobody posts all three median splits in the same race.
- What percentage of people finish an Ironman?
- This dataset counts finishers only, so it cannot answer that. It tells you how finishers were distributed, not how many starters became finishers. Treat any completion-rate figure you see attached to these medians as unsourced.
