Note how flat the curve is through the middle: men from 18-24 to 45-49 sit inside about nine minutes of each other. The age penalty at this distance does not really begin until the fifties.
What the half distance says about ageing
Across the published male cells from 30-34 to 75-79, the spread is about 105 minutes at 70.3 and about 245 minutes at 140.6. In absolute terms ageing costs far less over a half.
As a proportion of the race, though, the two are close — roughly 31% of a 70.3 against 35% of a 140.6. That points at a cost which scales with the duration you are asking your body to sustain, rather than a fixed penalty you pay on entry.
The practical reading: if you are over fifty and choosing a distance, the half is not merely shorter, it is proportionally kinder to the thing that actually declines.
