What 5,005 Sprint Triathlon Finishers Actually Show
We could not find a single published sprint-distance dataset that stated its sample size, its year and its source - so we built one. This is every finisher from 21 sprint triathlons between 2015 and 2025, with the working shown and each race linked.
Four findings, and one non-finding
1. There is no such thing as “the average sprint time”
Median finish times across these 21 races range from 1:23:24 to 1:54:16 — about 31 minutes apart. The swim's share of the race ranges from 6.5% to 22.8%, which tells you the courses are simply not the same length. World Triathlon defines sprint as an upper limit, and this is what that looks like in real results.
2. The mean was slower than the median in every single race
All 21 of them, by between one and seven minutes. Finish times have a long right tail, so every “average” in circulation describes a slower race than most finishers actually had. The median is the honest benchmark and almost nobody publishes it.
3. The bike is about half of every race
Between 43% and 57.9% of total time in every race here, despite the courses differing. If you want to find time, that is where it is — a 5% improvement on the bike returns more minutes than a 5% improvement anywhere else.
4. Transitions cost age-groupers about three times what they cost elites
2.4% to 4.8% of race time here, against roughly 1.2% in published studies of elite racing. For a typical finisher that is around four minutes standing still — more than most athletes will gain from a season of swim training, and available in an afternoon of practice.
The non-finding: age matters less than you would think
The fastest median age band is 30–39 and the slowest is 60 and over, separated by about eleven minutes. Across four decades of age that is a remarkably shallow curve, and it is a good argument for comparing yourself against people who train like you rather than people born the same year as you.

Faster than about 53% of all men in the sample

Percentiles are interpolated between the five published points rather than computed from every individual row, so treat the number as approximate. And because the races in this sample are not all the same distance, a percentile here is a rough orientation rather than a ranking you should quote.
Every race in the dataset
Absolute times are reported per race and never pooled, because the courses differ. Each row links to the public results it was computed from. 'T' is the two transitions combined.

The mean is slower than the median in both groups, which is the right-skew showing up again.
Finish times by age band
Both sexes combined, pooled across races. The curve is much flatter than the 'average time by age' tables in circulation imply.

Bands with fewer finishers are noisier; the 60-and-over band is the smallest here.
Method
- Every sprint-distance triathlon on the Platt Systems public results board from 2015 to 2025 was included. Nothing was excluded for being slow, small or unusual.
- Relay entries share the results table with individuals and were removed — they are identifiable by their age/sex code, division code and team name, and all three checks were applied.
- Events that are not swim-bike-run were excluded: a kayak-bike-run race and two school track meets whose names contain “tri”.
- Leg splits were reconciled against finish time; the 16 rows that disagreed by more than 90 seconds are counted in the finish-time statistics but excluded from the split shares.
- No athlete names are stored. This page and the data behind it hold aggregate statistics only.
- Percentiles use inclusive linear interpolation. The lookup tool interpolates between five published points rather than the full distribution, so it is approximate.
What this dataset cannot tell you
It is a convenience sample, not a representative one. Every race is in the US North-East, timed by one company, with fields in the low hundreds. A national picture would need results from many timers across many regions, and no such public dataset exists for sprint distance — that absence is why this page exists at all.
It also cannot tell you what you will run. A percentile against this field is orientation, not prediction. For that, put your own numbers into the race predictor, which works forward from a recent running race and your current fitness.
If you time races and would be willing to share results for analysis, or you know of a public dataset we have missed, we would genuinely like to hear from you. We would rather widen this than defend it.

- What is the average sprint triathlon time?
- We deliberately do not publish one, and this study is the reason. Across 21 real sprint races the median finish time ranged from 1:23:24 to 1:54:16 - a spread of about 31 minutes - because "sprint" is defined by World Triathlon as an upper limit rather than a fixed distance. A single average across races of different lengths describes nothing.
- What is the median sprint triathlon time in this dataset?
- Per race, between 1:23:24 and 1:54:16. Pooled by sex the median is 1:36:22 for men and 1:47:46 for women, but that pooled figure mixes races of different lengths and should be read as a rough orientation only.
- Why use the median instead of the average?
- Because finish-time distributions have a long right tail: there is a floor on human speed and no ceiling on slowness. In all 21 races in this sample the mean was slower than the median, by between one and seven minutes. Every "average" you read elsewhere is inflated by that tail and describes a slower race than most finishers actually had.
- How much does age slow you down in a sprint triathlon?
- Far less than people expect. Across this sample the fastest median age band is 30-39 and the slowest is 60 and over, and the gap between them is about eleven minutes. Training history and recent consistency predict a sprint result much better than age does.
- How much time do transitions cost age-group athletes?
- Between 2.4% and 4.8% of total race time across these races, with a pooled median of 3.9%. Published studies of elite racing put the two transitions combined at roughly 1.2%, so age-group transitions cost around three times what elite ones do. That is the single most available time saving in the sport.
- Where does the data come from?
- Every individual finisher from 21 sprint triathlons timed by Platt Systems and published on their public results board between 2015 and 2025 - 5,005 people, of whom 4,989 have leg splits that reconcile to their finish time. Relay entries are excluded. Each race links to its own results page so you can check the working.
- Is this a representative sample of triathlon?
- No, and we would rather say so plainly. Every race is in the US North-East, the fields are a few hundred each, and the races are not the same distance as one another. What it is: a real, checkable dataset, which is more than any of the widely-copied 'average time by age' tables can claim.
